When I was 14, I lived with my biological father for a very short time in a little town in Meigs County, Ohio called Pomeroy. Population 1,852. Imagine this Vegas girl showing up in that little town. At the time of the last census, only 23,770 lived in Meigs County.
This is a map of Meigs County:
I laugh because the neighborhood I live in now has more than 100,000 people – just in the neighborhood let alone the 2.5 million in the Greater Las Vegas Area!
I attended Meigs high school with 400 other students compared to the 3200 student high schools in Vegas. (Tabitha is graduating from a magnet school with 1,300 students).
The culture shock was real for both the town and myself.
They were convinced that I must have lived in a casino and were fascinated to learn of life in “Las Vegas”. For some reason, I used my imagination and told tall tales to make the story even richer.
I was fascinated by the area. When it snowed, we had to walk because the cars couldn’t drive down the hill. It seemed that I had more snow days than school days.
The town fun was the high school basketball game. (It was a HUGE deal). There were no restaurant chains or movie theaters then, and everyone knew everyone. Clogging was what we learned for dance. Everything closed in the evenings and on Sunday. Families were close.
And now, as I sit here, building my family tree through both paper trail and DNA (I tested on both ancestry.com and 23andme.com), I’m tracing an entire line, my mother’s, not my Fathers that were from that same Meigs County.
I had no idea how many of my ancestors (on both sides) had been there before me.
It’s a small world, after all. ❤️

- YAY! Ancestry adds TAGS to the Family Tree Builder! One of my favorite things about being a midlife woman is the ability to build my family tree. I have time now and it’s one of the few things I enjoy outside of work.
